CRISIS INTERVENTION

The private equity playbook, run for the investors in a business that is failing.

Wilde Mason works with angel investors, small syndicates and the boards they sit on, when a business they have backed is in trouble and the question is whether anything can be rescued.

The position

The investors put money into a business and it is not working. The founders are struggling or gone, the numbers cannot be relied on, and the board is meeting about what to do. Nobody at this scale calls a major consultancy. The investors need someone who has run businesses, who can tell them what is actually there, and who will do the work rather than write a report about it.

Wilde Mason runs the same improvement process it runs for owners, in a business that is failing. The sequence is the same. The difference is that it runs faster, it starts with cash, and the first decision is whether the business is worth saving at all.

How the work runs

01

Establish what is there.

Wilde Mason goes into the business and finds out what the investors actually own: the cash and how long it lasts, the liabilities, the customers, the contracts, the people, and which of the numbers the board has been given are true. This takes days, not months, and it ends with a plain answer: what can be rescued, what it costs to rescue it, and how long that takes.

02

Guide the board.

With the position established, Wilde Mason sits with the investors and works through the decision: fund it, restructure it, sell it, or stop. The investors decide. Wilde Mason makes sure they decide on true information and understand what each route means for their money.

03

Run the rescue.

Where the board decides to go on, Wilde Mason runs the recovery inside the business: cash controlled weekly, the plan cut to what the business can actually do, the cost base brought down to match, the customers and people the business depends on kept. This is the private equity playbook, applied with no time to waste.

04

Put the systems in.

A business that nearly failed usually failed for want of basic processes: financial reporting, a management cadence, clear roles, decisions taken once and followed through. Wilde Mason installs them so that the business does not go back to where it was once the immediate crisis has passed.

Leadership

In most of these situations the chief executive is part of the question. Wilde Mason works alongside the chief executive where the board keeps them, manages the replacement where the board does not, and takes the role itself where the business needs someone in the seat now.

Wilde Mason provides interim and fractional executives for the duration of the recovery: chief executive, chief operating officer or chief restructuring officer, full time or for the days a week the business needs, until the position is stable and a permanent appointment can be made.

Boundaries

Wilde Mason is not an insolvency practitioner. Formal insolvency work is carried out by licensed practitioners and counsel, and Wilde Mason works alongside them where a business reaches that point.
