THE FRAMEWORK

How Wilde Mason creates value

Wilde Mason runs Private Equity playbooks for the people who already own or manage a business, so that they capture that value themselves. For a business in trouble, the same sequence is used to establish what can be saved and to save it. For an investment company, Wilde Mason installs the sequence in the firm itself, so that it buys, manages and reports on its investments the way a private equity firm does.

The four stages

01

Examine the business as a sophisticated buyer would

The business is examined the way a buyer would examine it before paying for it: what it is worth today, what would make it worth more, and what it would take to get there. The assessment covers the whole business, because a buyer does not know in advance where the value is. It ends with a plain statement of where more value can be captured and how that translates into an improved valuation.

02

Understand where value is being lost or is not being captured

A private equity firm has a known set of interventions it runs on the companies it buys, and which ones it runs depends on what the diligence found. The high skill decision is which playbooks apply to this business, in what order, and what each is worth, so that the owner or the board commits to specific work with a specific value case.

03

Do the real work inside the business alongside the existing team

The work is done inside the business by senior operators, alongside the people already there, with a view to creating lasting change and higher talent density within the firm. Wilde Mason focuses on improving human capital as well as the objective valuation improvements.

04

Measure the value that has been captured and created

The result is measured the way an investor measures it: what the business would now sell for, and what it would have sold for before. The fundamental objective of the work is to increase what either what the business would sell for or what the owner would sell it for because these are real proxies for structured measurement of improvement.

Who the sequence runs for

Owners and managers who want to capture the value themselves

The sequence is run on their business, and the value it creates stays with them.

Private equity playbooks

A business where control is changing hands

The sequence starts with securing control and setting the mandate, and the rest follows.

Change management

A business in trouble

The sequence is run at speed, starting with cash, to establish what can be saved and to save it.

Crisis intervention

An investment company

The sequence is installed in the firm itself, so that it buys, manages and reports on its investments the way a private equity firm does, and can show that to the investors it wants to raise from.
